A glimpse of Finland’s efforts to open up opportunities in the biotech sector.
Since the mid-1990s’ Finland has taken the initiative in favour of innovation, with the biotech sector of the life science industry at the top of its government’s list of priorities. Orion Pharma is a good example.
Since 1991, there have been about 120 start-up companies in this sector, but they have had many difficulties due to the attitudes of private investors and the system of patent rights in Finland.
A supplement in Les Echos, France’s business daily reviews "the difficult conversion of Orion Pharma", which "began its career like a dispensary then as manufacturer".
As the company crossed over into research during the mid- 1980s’, "it gave itself neither the means, nor the organization to reach that point". However, Phase III clinical trials of its new anxiolytic are expected, carried out in partnership with Pharmacia.
