First prostaglandin glaucoma treatment to be approved as first-line in Europe
Pharmacia has successfully completed the Mutual Recognition Process for Xalatan(R) (latanoprost ophthalmic solution) in Europe as first-line monotherapy for lowering elevated intra-ocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
The UK acted as the Reference Member State, where the product was first licensed six years ago.
Xalatan is the only prostaglandin analogue glaucoma medication with first line status in Europe and is the first agent to receive a first-line indication for patients with primary open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension since the introduction of cholinergics and beta-blockers.
Xalatan is increasingly becoming a therapeutic alternative to older medications, particularly for patients with asthma or heart conditions in whom beta-blocker eye drops are contraindicated and those with an IOP not adequately controlled by other medications.
