VB International, media group organising the 6th Annual Bio/PharMOS event in Monaco, 20-21 March has announced that Dr Manon Cox of Protein Sciences Corp. will be speaking in the conference about the current biopharmaceutical aspects of influenza pandemic preparedness, with an update on new vaccines, antivirals and some potential alternatives..
Be prepared for opportunities
Among the armoury of drugs and treatments, which could be deployed in order to combat a potentially lethal, human transmissible mutant strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), are treatments, both prescription and generic, which are more widely available and affordable than vaccines and antivirals.
In addition, a number of nutraceutical products and dietary supplements, which will be discussed in the session, are thought to be effective in improving the outcome from HPAI infection if the resources of manufacturing and distribution services organisations could be brought on stream.
"We are delighted to welcome Manon Cox, on a return visit to Bio/PharMOS, so that the conference delegates can hear about the latest developments at Protein Sciences Corp. to develop an original vaccine using the company's proprietary technology platform," commented Vanina Broens, CEO of VB International. "This session will add considerably to the other tracks of the conference in identifying a wealth of new opportunities that are emerging in development and manufacturing services among the outsourcing community of the lifescience industry."
Manon Cox will be supported by Dr Vincent Munster, postgraduate research virologist at the Medical Center, Erasmus University in The Netherlands, speaking about the work of his department in the surveillance of low (L) and highly (H) pathogenic avian influenza (PAI) among wild birds, which could be a means of early detection of and rapid response to an H5:N1 outbreak.
Opportunities from globalisation
The Bio/PharMOS conference will open with a first-time visit to the event by Jim Miller, President of PharmSource Information Services, publisher of the renowned monthly newsletter, Bio/Pharmaceutical Outsourcing Report. In looking at the current state of the global pharmaceutical outsourcing sector, Jim is expected to review different ways that outsourced development and manufacturing is evolving in Europe, the USA and Asia. Jim will come to some interesting conclusions, with clear implications for the strategy of European CSOs, moving ahead with their range of services, both in manufacturing and development.
Taking over the baton from Jim Miller, José Casellas, VP of Business Development at Patheon's Puerto Rico operations moves into the fast track with a privileged insight into how a tiny Caribbean island can play such a major role in opening up opportunities for businesses looking to source products to introduce into the massive US marketplace.
José is followed by a panel of experienced speakers talking about the new opportunities from India and China in cross-border deals, both for services providers and their pharma and biotech customers. "This is a win-win scenario for all," explains Jayker Patel, MD, JP Pharmaceutical/Biotech Consultancy, who will speak about both the threats and opportunities in outsourcing products and services, and in forming strategic alliances.
For reasons, which will become apparent in the discussion, the model for development manufacturing in India may prove to be quite different from the currently perceived wisdom, as Chandra Rao of UK-based Friends Capital brokerage will discuss in his talk, giving delegates a far-sighted vision of cross-border transactions generating opportunities for discovery and development businesses in the West.
Nigel Richardson of Custom Healthcare dares to wake a sleeping dragon with his thoroughly well-informed review of the contract manufacturing scene in China. For those keen to learn about the opportunities and pitfalls of outsourcing in this expanding economy, the Bio/PharMOS conference hall is the place to hear it all just as it is.
Opportunities from nutrapharma line extensions
The conference identifies a third and very important column for business opportunity in development and manufacturing of natural products (nutraceuticals, botanicals), as Dr Rolf Lambert, pharma consultant with experience of both natural products and contract manufacturing, reveals. This segment is now a respectable path for all players, pharma, biotech and CMOs, to develop and to produce nutraceuticals as line extensions, while Cass Khan of Perrigo UK will deliver a keynote case study underlining how.
The session is Chaired by Dr Zaklina Buljovcic, Head of Submissions for Borderline Products at the regulatory affairs firm PharmaLex, Germany. Visiting speaker, Dr Mark Wach, from the US head office of Sylvan, USA, the global specialists in fungal technology will recount a fascinating story about the development and production of Monacolin-K by a process that beats China at its own game in traditional medicine while opening up the possibility of adding to the armoury of treatments to be reviewed by Manon Cox.
Widening opportunities for all
Running throughout the conference threads, delegates will hear from Bikash Chaterjee, President of Pharmatech Associates, USA speaking about risk - both in validation on day 1 and its management on day 2 in a case study. These presentations are backed up by keynote talks on validation, by Marco Scanziani of Hospira One 2 One, Italy, and a review of aseptic (sterile) filling by Gerald Hofer of Fresenius Kabi Product Partnering, Germany.
Damir Stanic of Infotehna, Slovenia, unveils his firm's latest tool for efficient collaboration in document management, underlining the Bio/PharMOS theme of 'opportunities in the true spirit of partnership.'
Manfred Papaspyrou of Rentschler Biotechnologie returns to the Grimaldi Forum to reveal all about the growth and expansion of Rentschler, demonstrating unequivocally that opportuniteis are there to be seized. Hot on the biotech spot, Claudia Petersen, Senior Manager of Biotechnology at West Pharmaceuticals, Germany, illustrates yet more opportunity for outsourcing, for example in testing container closures for extraction and leaching.
With so much opportunity, all that remains is to discover how to extract or leach the funding from the investment community, as will be discussed in a lively panel wrap-up of the two days. One thing for sure, Bio/PharMOS 2007 is the event to open up awareness of the returns that are waiting to be made from outsourcing and collaboration -- in a true spirit of partnership.
So, don't be an ostrich and catch cold, or flu, from beneath the sand. Leg it across to the Grimaldi Forum to pick up your passport into the conference hall. See you there!
