Oxoid launches new culture media

Specialist sterile medium for MFT and ’meat-free’ broth for biopharmaceuticals

Oxoid has added a Gamma-Irradiated Tryptone Soya Broth (TSB) to its range of high quality media and the company has launched a new vegetable-based culture medium to its Oxoid Veggietone range of meat-free culture media and peptones.

Oxoid gamma-irradiated TSB is particularly suitable for sterility testing and validation of aseptic media filling procedures. In the Media Fill Test (MFT) to assess aseptic processing, a sterile powder substitutes for a pharmaceutical product. It is then subject to exactly the same processing conditions as the product, including filling and finishing, to establish no bacterial contamination occurs during the process.

The powder is readily soluble in sterile water, then incubated for detection of any organisms present.  Gamma-irradiated TSB simplifies media preparation for MFTs. In-house media sterilisation prior to use is no longer necessary.

New Oxoid Vegetable Peptone Phosphate Broth (VPPB-VG200) has been developed as a substitute for Tryptose Phosphate Broth (TPB) in situations where ’meat-free’ status is advantageous, such as certain biopharmaceutical applications.

Despite meticulous precautions, concerns remain that use of meat-based growth media could lead to contamination of production lines with prions responsible for BSE or other Transmissable Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs).  Manufactured from vegetable protein (pea flour) and containing no raw material of animal origin, Oxoid VPPB reduces this risk. Like other Veggietone products, it is certified as free from genetically modified material.
